Jane Jacobs — RIP

Filed under: FrontPage — by Will Kirkland @ 11:21 am

We had the good fortune to hear Jane Jacobs speak on her last trip to San Francisco. What a feisty old dame! Notice the year she moved to Canada. She couldn’t stand what was happening in the US anymore…. If you haven’t read Life and Death and you are a city creature, treat yourself.

Jane Jacobs, the writer and thinker who brought penetrating eyes and ingenious insight to the sidewalk ballet of her own Greenwich Village street and came up with a book that challenged and changed the way people view cities, died yesterday in Toronto, where she moved in 1968. She was 89.

We here in The Annex neighbourhood in downtown Toronto where Jane lived have started a book of condolence which will be forwarded to her family.

Because you can’t sign the book in person, you may leave any messages or memories at our Jane Jacobs online memorial weblog:

    http://www.JaneJacobs.TYO.ca

Your messages will be collected and forwarded to her family.

    Thanks,
