GOP v. GOP
Almost all the morning blogs and on-line news feature this:
A powerful Republican committee chairman who has led the fight against President Bush’s signing statements said Monday he would have a bill ready by the end of the week allowing Congress to sue him in federal court.
“We will submit legislation to the United States Senate which will … authorize the Congress to undertake judicial review of those signing statements with the view to having the president’s acts declared unconstitutional,” Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., said on the Senate floor.
Most of the links go to this AP article by Laurie Kellman. Hmmm. Frankly, I’ll believe it when it happens. Arlen Spector keeps getting high swelled-chest ratings for opposing President Bush on one thing or another but in the end some deal is worked out. There isn’t much of the GOP left, with luminaries such as Lou Dobbs slamming Bush on the signing statements, Pat Buchanan furious about the war in Iraq and now in Lebanon, Bill Buckly saying Bush is not a true conservative. What is in its place hasn’t been named yet. When the body snatcher takes over the body do we still call it by its original name?
