Kuwait - Lebanon - Bush

Filed under: FrontPage | Lebanon | Middle East — by Will Kirkland @ 7:42 am

Jeez, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an ad like the full page ad on page 7 of today’s New York Times. There is no on-line link to it but it’s a screamer. Rough red margin all around, 12 color photos of devestation in Lebanon, including bodies, legless children and howling parents. The text runs:

An Open letter to
His Excellency George W. Bush
the President of the U.S.A.
We agree with you and all the people of the globe in your rejection
of Fascism. However, looking at the pictures of the Lebanese casualites
from the Israeli bombing August 2006, we think there is
a misunderstanding in determining:
“Who deserves to be accused of being a fascist”!!!!

with our high respect
Al Kharafi Group
P.O. Box: 886 - 13009 safat, Kuwait

While I doubt the persuasive power of such an ad in such a context I am amazed that the Times didn’t find a reason not to publish it. In part, possibly, it’s because the Al Kharafi Group is not some fly-by-night agitational group. It is Kuwait’s largest contracting company with projects around the world. In other full-page ads in the Arab world it has called for the creation of a multination non-profit to rebuild Lebanon.

‘Non-profit’ Kharafi to rebuild southern Beirut; ‘Join me’

The Al-Kharafi family, which owns the company, is Sunni and has called for all Muslims, to help rebuild the predominantly Shiia south.

  1. Jack Kaplan:

And if one takes as a given, what Ray McGovern says, then by implication we in the U.S.A. are also the fascists, by the ads criteria of the slaughter depicted:

“Ray McGovern: The most important thing, from our perspective, is to determine what role the US government played. It’s very clear that the US government not only gave the green light to the Israelis, but actively encouraged them to do what they are doing now, and then blocked diplomatic efforts to prevent them, to halt them, or to have an immediate cease-fire. That much is clear. You can even read Charles Krauthaumer, who says precisely that: that we are proud that we not only gave the permission, but we encouraged them to do precisely what they are doing.”
