Foley: Values Attack Dog

Filed under: Democrats | FrontPage | Republicans — by Will Kirkland @ 7:04 am

Matier & Ross in the SF Chronicle have a little tid-bit about Mark Foley (R-Pred) that deserves some more research.

Under the rug: House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi has called for a congressional ethics investigation of ex-Rep. Mark Foley over his sexually explicit e-mails to teenage pages on Capitol Hill — and, in this case, the paybacks run deep.

For years, Foley has been one of the right wing’s attack dogs on the “values” issue. When the fight broke out to succeed Dick Gephardt as House Democratic leader a couple years back, the Florida Republican went so far as to brand San Francisco’s Pelosi and rival Democratic Caucus Chairman Martin Frost of Texas as “so liberal they make Larry Flynt look like Charlton Heston.”

“He was like the guy in ‘Scarface’ who walks in with a machine gun and shoots anyone in front of him with a ‘D’ in front of their name,” said Democratic strategist Chris Lehane.

And now Pelosi and her Democratic posse are shooting back.

Perhaps an honest world will never exist. But what's to keep us from dreaming? If each one of us tries to change, maybe we'll succeed.
