Ethics and Climate Change

Filed under: Climate Change | FrontPage — by Will Kirkland @ 8:18 pm

Early in May an interesting conference took place at the University of Washington:

Ethics and Climate Change

Billed as a major jump start to public discussion of ethics and climate change, philosophers, scientists and political philosophers were invited.

Here are abstracts for some of the presentations.

Commentary on the conference and links to some of the full papers is here at the WeatherChannel’s blog.

One of the most interesting presenters to readers here is Henry Shue, whose work includes the ethics of climate change as well as war, its conduct and its rationale. Here is a 4 year old piece in Dissent on the Debate on Torture.

Words for Acts

Of all the enemies of public liberty, war is perhaps the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies. From these proceed debt and taxes. And armies, debts and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few...No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.

James Madison, 1795
