Afghanistan: War Without End

The Louisville Courier-Journal is relieved that Afghanistan seems to be getting some long overdue attention from the administration: “Any list of reasons for Afghans’ despair and renewed attraction to the Taliban must begin with President Bush’s handling of the Afghan mission. There have been too few American troops and too little aid from the onset, but that problem was greatly magnified by the diversion of military personnel and resources to an unnecessary war in Iraq.”

Words for Acts

Of all the enemies of public liberty, war is perhaps the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies. From these proceed debt and taxes. And armies, debts and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few...No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.

James Madison, 1795
