CRISIS IN SOUTHERN MEXICO–FILM AND PRESENTATION

A documentary film and a talk will focus on current human rights crises occurring in Mexico’s three most southern states–Chiapas, Guerrero and Oaxaca. The speaker, Tatiana Markus of International Service for Peace (SIPAZ), holds a Humanitarian Law degree from the University of Lund in Sweden. Based in Chiapas, Tatiana will give an update on the crisis in the Zapatista communities in state and the latest strategy to displace the indigenous from their lands.

Bay Area activists recently participated in a SIPAZ delegation to Guerrero, where, as in Chiapas and Oaxaca, organizers, peasants and indigenous peoples suffer threats and abuse linked to increased militarization and state impunity. As indigenous people struggle for justice and dignity and demand economic, social and cultural rights, they continue to be subjected to state-sponsored repression.

The program, sponsored by the Task Force on the Americas, will be held on Friday, April 11, 7:30 PM at the First United Methodist Church, 9 Ross Valley Drive (at Fourth Street), San Rafael. A $5-10 donation is requested. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. The venue is wheelchair accessible. For more information call 415/924-3227, email mitf@igc.org or go to www.mitfamericas.org.

Words for Acts

Perhaps an honest world will never exist. But what's to keep us from dreaming? If each one of us tries to change, maybe we'll succeed.
