More Storms for Burma
The weather services are predicting another storm for rain soaked Burma — as aid efforts have been slowed to a trickle by the refusal of the Junta to allow full bore relief supplies and teams to enter the country.
Heavy rains and another powerful storm are posing a serious threat to relief operations in Myanmar’s cyclone-devastated delta, where so little aid has arrived that the U.N. warned today of a possible “second wave of deaths” among an estimated 2 million survivors.
The warning came as the Red Cross warned that the death toll from Cyclone Nargis could be at least 68,833 and as high as 127,990 — considerably higher than the government’s official count of 34,273 dead.

The operations update containing those numbers was attempting to reflect the range of estimates of a number of different organizations. We are not verifying these figures. There is no Red Cross Red Crescent death toll figure. The focus of our assessments is on identifying the needs of affected communities, and then using these assessments to guide our assistance as quickly and as effectively as possible.
