The Democratic Convention: Managing the Clintons

Filed under: Critical Voices | Democrats — by Bob Zuber @ 1:45 am

Appearing in the Denver Post (via Politico), John Harris describes some of the lingering hurts and political mis-steps that keep the Obama and Clinton camps at arms length: “Few Clinton associates interviewed believed there was any doubt she would run for president again if Obama should lose. And the Clintons believe a Democratic loss is entirely possible. They no longer vocalize their beliefs that Obama has scant experience and faces huge problems connecting with lower-income whites and other key voting blocs. But the criticisms they leveled last winter and spring — both publicly and more sharply in private conversations with top Democrats — were entirely sincere at the time and have not gone away.”

Interesting that the Clintons don’t see Obama’s weakness as being too accommodationist, too “nice,” but that he’s more like a “Chicago thug,” just the characteristics many Obama supporters wish he had. It will be interesting if the Clintons are proven right: if they don’t get more enthusiastic and really campaign and then he does win they may find a horse head in their beds
