Hurricane Ida: Flooding Nicaragua to Tabasco

Update: Hurricane Ida, the first Atlantic hurricane to target the United States this year, plodded Sunday toward the Gulf Coast with 105 mph winds, bringing the threat of flooding and storm surges.

Though we’re not hearing much about it here, Ida – variously climbing above and falling below hurricane force winds– has dumped feet of water on western Nicaragua earlier in the week, and now over the Yucatan Peninsula. Predictions vary over its future course with some showing dissolution over the Gulf of Mexico while others have it hitting the Texas and Louisiana or even the Florida coasts. Besides the amount of water and destruction it has brought Ida is notable for being the first November Atlantic hurricane to make landfall in an El Niño year since 1925.
