The Death of Saddam: Misguided Punishment

Filed under: Iraq | Critical Voices | FrontPage — by Bob Zuber @ 3:57 am

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune sees little political or legal justification for the hanging: “Many of those who have served in Iraq, and their families, talk proudly of having rescued the Iraqi people from Saddam. His execution was the final act in that drama, and for many American service people a confirmation of their pride in helping free a people from a brutal dictator.

We don’t begrudge them their pride, but toppling Saddam for the benefit of the Iraqis was not adequate reason to send them to war, to see almost 3,000 of them die, so far, and many thousands more suffer horrendous mental and physical wounds. On our scales, Saddam’s death fails to balance even one American death in Iraq.”

In Dante’s Hell those guilty of the sin of cupidity are in the ninth circle, frozen in the Lake of Ice. Having cared for nothing but self in life, they are encased in icy Self for eternity. By making people focus only on oneself in this way, Satan and his followers turn their eyes away from the harmony of love that unites all creatures.
